This is a working library, not a finished book. I run a few businesses and I keep having the same conversations with owners about AI, systems, and where the human fits. Field Notes is where I write those thoughts down before they fade.

Most of what you read about AI is written for people building the technology. Very little of it is written for the person who runs a plumbing firm, a security company, a training provider, or a ten-person agency. That person does not want a science project. They want last month’s invoices chased without three evenings of admin. They want a quote out the door before the lead goes cold. They want the business to keep moving when they are off for a week.

Here is the line I keep coming back to. Business owners need AI without turning the business into a science project. The moment the tool becomes the work, you have lost the plot. The tool is supposed to give you back hours, not hand you a new hobby to maintain.

So that is the lens for everything here. I care about the work first. I care about the people doing the work second. I care about the model a distant third. When I get that order wrong, I build something clever that nobody uses. When I get it right, a slow job gets faster and the owner gets a Friday afternoon back.

You will see a few ideas repeat. Human-led, AI-powered. Process before automation. Useful beats impressive. They repeat because they are true in practice, not because they sound good on a slide. Each note tries to take one of these and make it concrete, with examples from real businesses rather than imagined ones.

How to use this. Read whichever title pulls you in. The notes do not need to be read in order. Some are principles I will defend in a meeting. Some are half-formed thoughts I am still testing. I will mark the difference where it matters.

If a note changes how you look at one job in your own business this week, it has done its work. That is the whole point. Not theory. One better job.
